"Armadillo" - Transfer 2/1 Responses
Opener starts with 1M, and we modify Responder's bids between 2♣ and 2M
for bidding advantage. I also make suggestions for bids above 2M but those
are not critical to the system.
- 2♣ALERT - Artificial game force. Denies 3M or 5OM; so it's either
minors based or balanced.
- 1♠-2♦ALERT - Transfer to hearts - shows 5 hearts, 2- spades,
and 10+ points. One round force.
- 1♥-2♦ALERT
1♠-2♥ALERT - bidding one below 2M shows exactly 3 card support and
is invitational or better
And then recommended higher level bids:
- 1♥-2♠ALERT - Invitational (exactly) with 6 spades (sometimes 7)
- 2NTALERT - 4+ support. GF or invitational+ as to your taste
- 3mALERT - exactly invitational with good 6 card suit
- 1♠-3♥ALERT - exactly invitational with good seven card suit
- 3MALERT - 4+ support. Invitational or Mixed as matches your decision for 2NT above
Continuations After 2♣ Game Force
We have jammed three types of hands (clubs, diamonds, balanced) into this
sequence, and you might think it becomes awkward, but the good news is that
not having to use space to show 3 card raises is enough to usually put us
on an even keel, unless things are misfitty, in which case we're usually
ending up in NT anyway.
Opener typically continues with shape
- 2♦ALERT - waiting, shows most balanced-ish hands
- 2OM - natural, 4 card suit.
- 2M - natural, 6 card suit.
- note - with 6M and 4OM we prefer to bid 2♥ (whichever suit M is) to
leave Responder space to bid a natural 2♠
- 2NT - natural, promises a stopper in OM
- 3m - natural, 5 card suit
- 3M - sets trump
- 4M - rock bottom opener with long M
There is some bidding space left over here; 3OM, 3NT and 4 level bids. I
do not currently have good suggestions.
After 1M-2♣-2♦
Opener has denied any special shape so Responder can now express their hand.
Note that neither 2♥ nor 2♠ are needed as neither 8 card fit is possible.
Later on, Responder may bid M naturally to try to land in a 7 card fit, but
for this turn, we are trying to confirm a minor suit fit at 3m.
- 2♥ALERT - 5+ clubs
- 2♠ALERT - 5+ diamonds
- 2NT - natural 12-14 or 18+
- 3♣ - very good clubs (sets trump?)
- 3♦ - very good diamonds (sets trump?)
- 3NT - natural 15-17
again there are various bids unusued which we can define later. Like perhaps
3M shows a splinter with 55 minors.
After 1♠-2♦, Transfer to Hearts
Opener bids at the two level to show a minimum, and anything else is a game
force. So, in particular:
- 2♥ - minimum with 2+ hearts
- 2♠ - minimum with 6+ spades
- 2NT - other minimum
- 3m - natural and game-forcing
- 3♥ - natural (3+ hearts) and game-forcing
- 3♠ - natural (6+ spades) and game-forcing
- 3NT - to play
- 4m - splinter raise (4+ hearts, 1- suit bid)
- 4♥ - minimal game accept with 3+ hearts
- 4♠ - minimal game accept with long spades
- 4NT - quantitative slam invite (not RKC - bid 3♥ first if you want to use RKC)
- 5m - exclusion blackwood for ♥
If Responder makes any call over Opener's minimum showing 2 level bid, that
is natural and creates a game force.
After Invitational+ Major Raises
That is, after 1♥-2♦ALERT, 1♠-2♥ALERT, (and 1M-2NT). Here we use:
- Step OneALERT - Opener declines the invite
- Step TwoALERT - Opener has a minimal accept of the invite
- Other - Opener is making a slam try of some sort
So note that in particular we do not show a minimal accept by jumping to 4M
in case Responder has slam interest of their own. 3M can be a control bid
in trumps(?)
